As we walk along, the path leads us down to the Khumbu Glacier moraine, where we’re faced with incredible peaks: Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori, and Mahalangur Himal. Even though we’re close to Everest, we still can’t see it. Nuptse stands tall on our right side as we cross the Khumbu Glacier. Along the way, we walk beside a gentle stream, but we can’t see the glacier itself because a giant wall of dirt and rocks is on its side.

Day 16 will be our most formidable challenge yet as we prepare for the summit push of Island Peak, standing at an impressive 6189 meters. Our day begins in the early morning hours, typically around 1 AM, to ensure ample time to complete the climb. Initially, we ascend the rock gully, navigating through several short rock steps before emerging on the right side of the gully.
After that, the path goes along a narrow ridge, which can be exciting and scary because it’s high up and open. We must be careful as we cross onto the glacier’s tip because there are cracks in the ice. Then, we’ll climb a steep, snowy slope to reach Island Peak. When we finally reach the summit of Island Peak, we will be amazed by the stunning views and take many photos to remember the moment. After that, we’ll return the same way we came, all the way to Chukung.

We can meditate at the famous monastery in Tenboch.
Trek from Tengboche to Namche Bazaar
Trek Duration
4/5hrs
Highest Altitude
3440m
We will trek down through the hillside blanketed by rhododendrons and juniper trees. If it’s spring, pink and red rhododendron flowers will ablaze our surroundings. Depending on our hunger and condition, after crossing the prayer flag, the festooned bridge over the DudhKoshi River trail will follow the DudhKoshi gorge, descending rapidly through the pine forests. The path eventually reaches Sansa, the region’s major trail junction.
We stop at Kyangjuma (3570 m) for a relaxed lunch. Following lunch, the trail to Namche Bazaar clings to the steep wooded slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends. After passing a Chorten, we reach the army camp at Namche Bazaar. We want to take a long last look (and picture!) back to Lhotse, the tip of Everest and Tengboche from here. On reaching our lodge, we take a nice hot shower and have a very relaxed sleep in our room in Namche Bazaar.
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
Trek Duration
6/7hrs
Highest Altitude
2800m
Early in the morning, after breakfast, we slowly cross the suspension bridges over the fast-flowing DudhKoshi and its tributaries. The trail becomes more level and natural. By today, we have started to get warmed up by the light breeze. As we pass this charming mountain air, any remaining sore throats and colds will be gone today. Although we travel the same route, we have completely different views.
We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendrons, pine forests, and snow-covered peaks in the distance. We walk through the Sherpa villages, noticing impressive faith in Buddhism and the culture of prayer stones and prayer flags. On arrival in Lukla, we stretch those sore legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. We experience the culmination of a fantastic trek on a happy note, with everyone back safe and sound with smiles.

You should focus on building your fitness and stamina to prepare for this climb. For this, you can do regular cardio and strength training. Acclimatization is key to avoiding altitude sickness, so follow an itinerary that allows gradual altitude gain and includes rest days. Mera Peak Vs Island Peak
Location & Altitude
Mera Peak is located in the Mahalangur range of the Himalayas, with an altitude of 6,476 meters (21,246 feet). Island Peak, on the other hand, stands at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) in the Imja Tse region, situated near the Everest region.
Route & Duration
The route to Mera Peak typically takes about 18-22 days, starting from Lukla, with a gradual ascent. The route to Island Peak is slightly shorter, usually around 18-21 days, and follows a similar trekking path through the Everest region. Both climbs require acclimatization and rest days for optimal success.
Difficulty
Mera Peak is considered slightly easier due to its less technical climbing route, although it still involves glacier travel and some basic mountaineering skills. While not extremely difficult, Island Peak requires more technical climbing, including crampons and ice axes to navigate the peak summit ridge.
Views
With Mera Peak, you will get stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayas, such as Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. While Island Peak also provides amazing views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other notable peaks. As the route will take you to EBC, it is very likely that you will get closer views of Everest.
The Success Rate
Mera Peak has a higher success rate due to its less technical nature and longer acclimatization time, with many trekkers reaching the summit. Island Peak, while still achievable for fit trekkers with mountaineering experience, has a slightly lower success rate due to its technical challenges and steeper terrain.
Why should you choose Island Peak over Mera Peak Climbing?
Are you the one looking for a more challenging climbing adventure? If so, then considering the Island peak over Mera Peak can be thrilling. The climb to Island Peak is more challenging, with steep ascends. You will have to navigate through a rocky ridge and snow headwalls. Thus, you must know how to use ice axes, crampons, and other technical elements.
Although both treks can be completed in a similar time frame, the Island Peak is for you if you want to get some experience in peak climbing, like Everest or Annapurna. The island peak provides a similar challenge, which will help you cope with those quite more easily. This peak climbing can be the best option if you have some prior climbing experience. For beginners, we generally suggest Mera Peak, which can prepare you for Island Peak. The combination of skill-building and incredible views makes Island Peak a rewarding choice.
How Your Day Looks While Climbing Island Peak
Each day during the Island Peak climbing offers you a unique experience. The journey starts early. We will get up at 6 AM and witness the morning sunrise over the Hills and Himalayas. After having breakfast of your choice, we will start our day adventure from around 7 AM to 8 AM. Generally, the morning sections are relatively easier to understand than the after-lunch sections. After trekking for 3 to 4 hours, we will stop at one of the tea houses along the trail for lunch. We will take a break of about an hour during our lunch stop.
Resuming our journey, we will again track for almost 3 hours. These sections are generally difficult to navigate due to rugged terrain and continue to ascend and descend. Finally, from around 4 PM to 5 PM, we will reach our destinations today and get into our respective lodges. In the remaining time, you can either explore the village or rest. Dinner is served at around 8 AM. After dinner, you can either chit-chat with fellow travelers or get to bed early and prepare yourself for the upcoming journey.
During the climbing adventure, the overall day can be quite tiring. This means that ascending as you approach the near summit demands technical skills. Make sure you are also prepared for this day of the overall adventure.
What to Expect for Food and Stay During Island Peak Climbing
During the Island Peak Climbing, you will stay in lodges for most days. These accommodations provide basic facilities and limited amenities. The rooms are usually shared in a twin-room setting. Similarly, these places generally have communal dining areas and shared bathrooms. You may also find rooms with attached bathrooms. Meanwhile, your meal, except for lunch and dinner in Kathmandu, is also included in our 21 Days Peak Climbing package. The agency also arranges the dining for camping days. The package consists of three meals daily, which the lodges serve according to their menus. Lunch and dinner will usually include Dal Bhat, a staple Nepali cuisine. Similarly, you can also buy snacks (personal expense), but they cost more than regular prices. We generally recommend that you avoid non-vegetarian food for safety reasons.
