Samtegang Winter Trek is a cultural trek passing through the villages of Punakha & Wangdi region in Beautiful Country Bhutan. As the name suggests, the best time to do the Samtegang Winter trek is from late autumn through winter. During this time, you can visit villages, farms, temples, and the beautiful nature of Bhutan. During this trek, you can go to the famous Drukpa Kuenley Lhakhang/temple. Drukpa Kuenley is known as the “Divine Mad Monk” because of the unusual ways he taught Buddhist philosophy.

Day to day schedule to Bhutan: 10d Samtegang Winter Trek

  • Day 1: Paro Arrival

    Flight Kathmandu-Paro Arrival and Transfer to hotel, o/n in a hotel

  • Day 2: Sightseeing of Paro o/n in a hotel (B,L,D)

    You will visit the fortified tower of Ta Dzong, now a natural history Museum, ruins of Drugyal Dzong that once guarded the invading Tibetan forces, and Kyichu Temple of 7th century and local township.

  • Day 3: Drive to Thimpu o/n in a hotel (B, L, D)

    In the morning, you will visit the famous Takstang Retreat (Tiger’s Nest) and in the afternoon drive to Thimpu- the capital of Bhutan

  • Day 4: Drive to Punakha,o/n in a hotel (B,L,D)

    Drive to Khuruthng with pack lunch provided from the hotel. Stop at Dochula pass at 10,000ft for a clear view of the snowcapped Himalayan peaks towards the north bordering Tibet. Descend to Punakha via the picturesque fortress that houses the winter migration of monks from Thimphu

  • Day 5: Drive and trek to Limukha (6hrs) o/n in camp (B,L,D)

    Drive to Punakha Dzong; the trek begins with a gradual climb through Rhododendron and Oak forests; en route visit the village of Dompala can be organised on the group’s choice

  • Day 6: Trek to Chungsakha (5hrs) o/n in camp (B, L, D)

    The trail today takes you through Rhododendron and Oak forests; en route visit the famous Drukpa Kuenley Lhakhang/temple, known as the Divine Mad Monk known for his amazing and surprising methods of teaching the Buddhist philosophy

  • Day 7: Trek to Samtengang (5hrs)o/n in camp (B,L,D)

    The trek takes you through the village of Sha in Wangue District. The people of this area have their own dialect of Dzongkha, and were known in olden times for the famous bull fights in the fields that sometimes led to duels amongst the village men, where a village status was required to be defended against a neighboring village

  • Day 8: Trek and drive to Thimphu, o/n in a hotel (B,L,D)

    The trail now drops till the motor road and drive to Thimpu

  • Day 9: Thimphu- Paro, o/n in a hotel (B, L, D)

    Drive to Paro and free afternoon

  • Day 10: Paro to Kathmandu, o/n in a hotel (B)

    Transfer to international airport in paro and fly to Kathmandu.
