Essential Information
Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek Difficulty
Dhaulagiri Base Camp is one of Nepal’s most popular and often demanded trekking routes. In this trek, you will trek to the base camp of the seventh-highest mountain in the world, Dhaulagiri, so there is no doubt you will have some difficulty while trekking. So, let’s look at some of the most common challenges during Base Camp Trekking.
Altitude Sickness
One of the most common difficulties trekkers face during the Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek is acute mountain or altitude sickness. It is a common occurrence for every trekker in Nepal; however, it is also one of the most prominent difficulties, mainly because it can derail every plan and might end your excursion to a halt.
The main reason for acute mountain sickness or altitude sickness is that when you start climbing at an altitude, the oxygen level starts depleting. Generally, altitude sickness starts from a height above 4000 m, and while trekking Dhaulagiri Base Camp, you will have to reach above 5000m, which suggests there is a higher chance of altitude sickness.
To prevent altitude sickness, take frequent rests between hiking to higher altitudes and acclimate to the climate. Furthermore, always keep medicine like acetazolamide, dexamethasone, and nifedipine, which treat altitude sickness. If you feel any symptoms, stop walking and try to lower the altitude.
Walking or Hiking For 7 Hours Daily
Another difficulty during the Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trekking is constant walking from sloppy terrains and barren landscapes to snowcapped mountains. For 14-15 days, you have to walk between 7-9 hours each day.
Hence, if your hygiene or stamina is not on par, you will quickly face fatigue, and the excursion can become very difficult. Furthermore, the trek is not a straightforward walk, so you must be very active, ready, and able to deal with any dynamic weather, bumpy roads, and terrains. You can also trek to Dhaulagiri with the Muskanta Pas
Trekking Permit for Dhaulagiri Base Camp
To trek to Dhaulagiri Base Camp, you will need two permits: A restricted Area Permit and an Annapurna Conservational Area Permit, along with a TIMS Card. It is important to check the most current permit requirements and regulations before your trek, as they may change over time. Let’s talk more about the permits required for Dhaulagiri Base Camp.
Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
Passing through the restricted area specified by the Nepal government, you must get this permit. The specific restricted routes include the Dhaulagiri Circuit trek. You cannot get this permit on your own. A reputable trekking agency with an experienced guide is necessary to get it. You can obtain it from the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu.
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit
Since parts of the Dhaulagiri trek fall within the Annapurna Conservation Area, you need an ACAP permit. You can get this permit on your own. But if you hire a guide, he will be responsible for getting this, along with RAP. You can get this permit from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu, Pokhara, or even the trek’s entry point.
TIMS Card
This is a must-have card for every traveler trekking in Nepal. It helps track you in case of emergencies. You can get this through a registered trekking agency or the Nepal Tourism Board. The TIMs card cost NPR 2000 per person for international trekkers and NPR 1000 for SAARC nationals.
