Overview

Trek to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) via Poon Hill in 16 days. Includes licensed guide, porter, permits, and all meals on trek. Private departures from Kathmandu.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of those journeys that stays with you long after you are back home. In 16 days, you go from the streets of Kathmandu to the heart of one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes on earth, the Annapurna Sanctuary. A high A scenic valley enclosed by peaks that rise above 7,000 and 8,000 metres. It is a trek that feels genuinely earned.

The trip begins in Kathmandu with a full day of sightseeing before anything else. You visit Swayambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. This is not just filler, it gives you real context for the country you are about to walk through. Nepal is not only mountains. It is ancient temples, Buddhist stupas, incense smoke over the Bagmati River, and streets that have been busy for centuries. Understanding that before you reach the trail makes the whole experience richer.

From Pokhara, a relaxed lakeside city in the shadow of the Annapurnas, you drive by jeep up to Ulleri and begin the trek. The first stretch climbs through rhododendron and oak forest toward Ghorepani, and on Day 5 you wake before sunrise for the hike up to Poon Hill at 3,193 metres. On a clear morning, the sunrise over Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre is the kind of sight that makes you stop talking and just look.

After Ghorepani, the trail drops toward Chhomrong, the largest Gurung village in the area, and from there you follow the Modi Khola river deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary. The landscape changes completely as you gain altitude, forests give way to open valley, stone gives way to glacier, and the peaks close in around you. By the time you reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,700 metres, you understand why people return to this part of Nepal again and again.

Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 metres in a natural amphitheater of peaks. Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and Machhapuchhre surround you on all sides. It is a place that earns its reputation.

The descent brings a well-earned stop at the natural hot springs in Jhinu Danda. A short walk downhill from the village, beside the river, and genuinely good for tired legs. A free day in Pokhara follows before the return to Kathmandu.

This trek is suited for travelers who are reasonably fit and enjoy being outdoors. You do not need mountaineering experience or any special technical skills. The trails are well-established and walked by people of all ages and fitness levels. What you do need is a willingness to walk for 5 to 7 hours a day and an honest preparation before you arrive.

Why Choose This Trip

The route is designed, not just assembled

This itinerary approaches ABC via Ghorepani and Poon Hill rather than the standard Modi Khola valley route that most shorter treks use. That means you see two genuinely different landscapes, forested ridgelines and open viewpoints on the way up, followed by the dramatic inner Sanctuary on the descent. It makes the trek more varied and honestly more interesting.

You are never rushed to the trailhead

A dedicated day in Kathmandu and a full arrival day in Pokhara mean you begin the trek rested and with some sense of where you are. Many packages skip this and put exhausted travelers on the trail the morning after a long flight. We do not do that.

The altitude gain is paced properly

From Ulleri at 1,960 metres to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 metres, you gain altitude over seven days with natural rest built into the schedule. This is not just comfort, it meaningfully reduces the risk of altitude sickness compared to faster itineraries that push clients to higher elevations too quickly.

You walk with people who know the trail

Your guide is government licensed, knows this route well, and has done this trek many times. They monitor how the group is doing, manage permits and guesthouse bookings, handle any logistical issues on the ground, and know when weather or trail conditions require a change of plan. Having that experience alongside you matters more than most travelers expect.

Porter support is genuine, not token

One porter for every two clients means your main bag is carried for you and you walk with a day pack. This is not a luxury; it changes how you experience the trail completely. You can focus on what is around you rather than on the weight on your back.

The hot springs stop is real, not just a selling point

The stop at Jhinu Danda’s natural hot springs on the descent is one of those details that sounds good on paper and turns out to be even better in practice. After days of high-altitude trekking, it does exactly what it should. We build it into the itinerary properly rather than rushing past it.

We run this for everyone

Solo travelers, couples, families, small groups. We operate private departures for all of them. You do not need to wait for a group or fit into a fixed schedule. Your departure date is your own.

Everything is handled

Permits, transfers, guesthouses along the route, meals on trek, guide and porter. All of it is arranged before you arrive. You land in Kathmandu, meet your guide, and the logistics are taken care of. That is the point of booking with a ground operator who has been doing this since 1989.
