Kanchenjunga Trek Permit

Kanchenjunga Trek Permit

Trekkers need to obtain the Kanchenjunga Trek permit to access the remote routes of Kanchenjunga Trek. You will need not one but two permits for the trek.

The Kanchenjunga base camp Trek is a lesser-known trekking route in Nepal. The off-the-beaten trails of the route go through diverse landscapes, isolated valleys, deep gorges, and charming settlements. En route, trekkers must go through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and some restricted areas.

Thus, trekkers need permits to access these conservation and restricted areas. They are known as the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Permit (KCAP) and Restricted Area Permit (RAP). There are several checkposts along the route. Failure to provide the permits at the checkpoints will result in fines or trekkers having to return. Hence, trekkers must get a permit before the trek.

The permit system helps the authorities in regulating tourism. It contributes to the conservation of the trekking routes, nature, ecosystem, and cultural heritage. Likewise, it also aids in ensuring the safety and security of the trekkers. Permits also play a vital role in sustainable tourism.

There are a few steps for obtaining the permits. Here, we will discuss the permit’s procedures, considerations, costs, and other relevant information. We have compiled all the necessary information for you. So, make sure you stick with us until the end. Now, without any more delays, let us begin!

How to get a Kanchenjunga Trek Permit?

Take a look at how you can obtain these permits:

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Permit

Trekkers can obtain the permit by themselves. You can apply personally at Bhrikutimandap Tourism Service Center, Kathmandu. The service center is open every Saturday and Sunday except for public holidays. Its operating hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM. It takes about an hour to get the permit after submission.

You can get the permit via registered trekking agencies if you find it a hassle to do it yourself. Another option is getting the permit at the checkpost during the trek.

Restricted Area Permit

It is not possible to get restricted area permits for trekkers personally. You have to process the application via registered trekking agencies. They will apply with all the required paperwork on your behalf.

Then, the agency will pick up the permit from the Trekking Department of Nepal Immigration Office, Maitighar. Note that the Nepal Tourism Board or TAAN does not issue these restricted area permits.

With Himalayan Leaders, you do not have to worry or go through the hassle of getting the permits. Our Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek package comes with both permits. Procedure For Getting Kanchenjunga Trek Permit

The first step in getting the Kanchenjunga Trek permit is to find a group, as solo trekking is no longer allowed in Nepal. It is possible to find the group through a travel agency or online. Then, you must find a well-reputed and government-registered trekking agency. You cannot get a restricted area permit personally.

After finding a trusted trekking agency, you must have all the necessary documents for the permits. These essential documents include the following:

  • Photocopy of your valid passport
  • Scanned or e-copy of passport-size photo for restricted area permit’s online form
  • Travel Insurance

The trekking agency will add the permits’ remaining documents (trekking group details, verified itinerary, Tax clearance certificate, license, and guide’s trek insurance).

That was the procedure for getting the Kanchenjunga Trek permit. While getting the permits, there are also a few things that trekkers need to consider. They are:

  • Only a licensed trekking agency can process the permit on the trekkers’ behalf; trekkers cannot obtain them individually.
  • Children under the age of ten get free permits.
  • The permits are only valid for single entry and individual trekkers; permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • You must adhere to the rules and regulations of the National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act, 2029 B.S., while accessing the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area.
  • Trekkers must carry both permits at all times during the trek and show them when concerned officers ask for them.
  • Trekkers can only enter the areas of the conservation and restricted area as designated in the permit.
  • The permit costs include VAT, TAX, and any other government fees.

Kanchenjunga Trek

The Kanchenjunga Trek route lies in the far eastern region of Nepal. It lies near the Sikkim border of India. It is among the country’s hidden and underexplored trek routes.
